We struggle daily with those (who doesn’t, though?). I thought that as the kids got older, they’d learn how to cope with them a little better, but when you’ve got two kids with ADHD, it gets a little more complicated.
Their little minds are so filled with clutter, that processing these feelings isn’t so easy. A little annoyance feels like a giant hurdle that they can’t seem to get over.
Although being on medication has helped, there’s a lot of work to be done. Now that the kids aren’t so distracted by a million different things at once, they’re more able to focus on processing their feelings in more acceptable ways.
Instead of lashing out at each other, I’ve so far got them convinced that maybe they should just go and scream into their pillows. Not always productive, but at least it helps blow off some steam.
We’re always looking for new ways to cope with the magnitude of emotions that the kids have, but we’re taking it step by step.
